Woongarra Marine Park

female diver having a close look at some soft coralWoongarra Marine Park is only a 15 minute drive from Bundaberg and offers some of Queenslands most accessible shore diving. The two main sites are Hoffman's Rock and Barolin Rocks. Hoffman's rock is at Bargara and Barolin Rocks is located at Innes Park.

Hoffman's Rock

Hoffman's Rock is located at Bargara about 2km South of the main town. The coastline is a rocky one with plenty of colourful hard and soft corals only a few metres from the shore. There are plenty of pelagic fish to be seen and the site is close to Bundaberg's turtle rookery giving a good opportunity to see corals.

Hoffman's Rock is on a point so you can dive either side of the rocks. The maximum depth is around 10 metres. The entry point depends on the tide and the sea conditions. The best diving is when the wind is light usually early in the morning. Entry is off the rocks. The best entry is usually to find a small shallow pool of water, gear up and swim out to the deeper water. You must consider the local wave conditions when deciding on the entry point.

Tusk fisk at Hoffman's Rock A feature of the dive is split bommie which is in about 10m of water on the northern side of the point. Two large submerged rocks with a small swim through in one and a small cave in the other. The rock act as a fish attractor for large schools of fish. The small cave has been full of baitfish and turtles, giant bull rays and groupers have been seen inside.

The site is ideal for students as there is some large sandy areas which is perfect for learning skills. On the surface there is also the chance of seeing dolphins and turtles if you are lucky. In the whale season there is also a chance of hearing the whale song underwater.

Barolin Rocks

Barolin Rocks is located south of Innis Park and next door to Coral Cove International Golf Course, approximately 15 minutes drive to the dive site.  The coastline is a rocky one with plenty of colourful hard and soft corals only a few metres from the shore.  It is well known that sea snakes are to be seen nearly on every dive and a very good chance of seeing our resident woobbegong shark.

Barloin Rocks Dive siteBarolin Rocks is also a point so you can dive either side of the rocks.

Barolin Rocks is a excellent night dive with beautiful cowry shells all along the rock wall.  Also a very good drift dive when the tide is on the way out from a king tide.
